A wound that does not heal after 2 weeks of routine care is called a problem wound. Problem wounds usually have root causes, including reduced blood flow to the wound area. Destruction or malfunction of capillaries lead to decreased blood flow in these areas. This could leads to a lack of immune system cells, nutrients and tissue growth, as well as antibiotics in the wound position.
Treatment of these wounds requires special care that can heal the wounds by removing the primary causes of the wound. If proper blood flow can be provided to the wound area, this initial problem will be resolved, which, along with other supportive cares including frequent wound cleansing (debridement) and special dressings, will provide wound healing. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an adjuvant care that can provide a good basis for the body to repair capillaries by itself and in the areas where damage has occurred (problem wounds) and enable lasting wound healing.
